Parallel Signals is an experimental research tool that identifies narrative patterns connecting contemporary news events to historical and literary precedents. By recognizing these echoes, we aim to provide a deeper lens for understanding the present.
Our Methodology
Data Collection
We continuously monitor news sources to identify significant events. Each event is processed to extract key narrative elements: actors involved, themes present, and the underlying story structure. Our historical database includes annotated events from classical literature, historical records, and documented case studies.
Pattern Extraction
Our algorithm identifies pattern signatures—abstract representations of narrative structures. For example, a warning->ignored->catastrophe pattern captures the archetypal story of ignored warnings leading to disaster. These signatures enable cross-temporal comparison regardless of specific details.
Parallel Matching
Events are matched based on pattern signature alignment, actor role similarity, and thematic overlap. Each match receives a score indicating the strength of the parallel. We prioritize matches that reveal meaningful structural similarities rather than superficial coincidences.
